Peat moss is a dead, fibrous material that forms when decomposing organic matter (primarily Sphagnum moss) submerges into peat bogs over thousands of years. It is harvested and widely used in gardening as a soil amendment to add to your soil mix to increase soil moist and hold water for plants. However as it is very moist, peat moss should not replace soil in Singapore hot and humid environment. Peat moss can be a good medium to sprout seeds though.
Key Benefits in Gardening
- Excellent Moisture Retention: It can hold several times its weight in water, slowly releasing it to plant roots as needed.
- Nutrient Retention: It has a high cation exchange capacity (CEC), meaning it helps soil hold onto essential nutrients so they don't wash away.
- Sterile Medium: Pure peat moss contains no pathogens, weed seeds, or harmful insects, making it ideal for seed starting.
